"Twenty-five years ago, the late A.C. Greene set out to list the 50 best books on Texas, which he did in a magazine article and then as a book by that title. Eight years ago, his list was reissued as The 50 + Best Books on Texas, which is still available from the University of North Texas Press. I commend it to you.

Although I don't consider myself an expert akin to Greene, I have been writing a weekly column about Texas books for the past five years, so I approach the following task with some credentials. Here are 10 books I would recommend for anyone's Texas library. I've selected only books still in print and readily available and haven't tried to include a certain number of books in each genre.

•The Time It Never Rained, a novel by Elmer Kelton about the drought of the 1950s.

•Lonesome Dove, generally regarded as the best novel by Larry McMurtry.

•The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog, the first of John Erickson's lovable series, sometimes considered a children's book for ages 9-12 but popular with adults as well...."
